Women In Business Series: Balance Me Out

Meet Nancy, Owner of Balance Me Out , a mobile coffee/tea cart with an elevated experience. If you have ever come across Nancy’s cart, you know it stands above the crowd. She is kind, and warm, and offers tremendous knowledge about her craft in a way that feels welcoming. Her story is as fascinating as she, and I am so excited to share it with you!

Can you tell me your name, what your business does, and who you serve.

Nancy Guzman. Balance Me Out fuels the community with delicious drinks that have less sugar and more flavor.

When did you open? What prompted the start of your company?

I established my company in November of 2020. I was very comfortable and happy with my job at a local school. I led the art program there. On days I didn’t teach art, I filled in as a guest teacher. I was living the dream. When covid hit, school closures came, and my job was terminated. When thinking of my next steps, the only thing I was sure of was that I had to do something that I loved, something good for the community, and something that would allow my creativity to flourish. Balance Me Out was born!

What is the best part about what you do?

I make peoples day better with the best ingredients!

What are some of the setbacks/challenges you’ve faced in running your business?

I opened during covid, so the supply chain was a bit challenging to navigate. Also, many of the businesses that I first partnered with closed due to covid. But that also led me to challenge myself and create my own ingredients, syrups, and pastries. One ingredient that was the most challenging was my Golden Bear Paste, but in the end it helped me create a drink that won the Gold Award at the California State Fair in 2023!

What is on the horizon for your company? Big changes, growth, branching out?

I am looking into creating my grab and go line which includes pre batched lattes and drinks.

What advice would you give to other women interested in starting their own business?

Write down what you want. What do you want it to look like, feel like, sound like, taste like, even smell like. Really get a hold of what you want because that will also help you decide what you don’t want. Don’t ask of your customers to do what you aren’t willing to do yourself. May times we want to promote our small business and then run to big box companies and chains for a majority of our products/supplies. Don’t ask your customers to do what you aren’t willing to do yourself. If you want them to support local, you need to support local as well. I understand some things may not be found locally but many things are.

Final Notes? Anything special youd like to share with our community?

This quarter, every time you make a purchase at Balance Me Out, you support a local non profit that has a club at University of Sacramento, California. International Studies Inc, provides community both on and off campus to be a resource for students not only for their academic success, but also to enhance their cultural experience and everyday life during their study in America
